Museums
At the Centre of Berlin's History:
There are 5 museums, and each of it is unique in its own way. They are certainly worth a visit.
The Nikolai church : After being renovated, it will be open again with a new exhibition starting in March 2010. Interactive stations will teach you the town's history in the literal sense. There is also impressive evidence left of Berlin's history in the form of many valuable burial places of important former Berlin citizens and the visible building stages of the beautiful founding church.
The baroque Ephraim-Palais offers great architecture from the in- and outside. The "most beautiful corner of Berlin" also has some splendid temporary exhibitions. There are first-class curated exhibitions of Berlin artists, art and art history on 3 levels. They are also leading back to the present again, as in the case of exhibitions held for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall or by presenting contemporary artists.
In the Knoblauchhaus , the third branch of the town museum in the Nikolai quarter, the Biedermeier style is still vividly present: The important bourgeois family's rooms are as lovingly designed as they are informative. They almost seem to be still in use.
Heinrich Zille (1858–1929), sharp-witted and sympathetic observer of the town and all of its rough edges, is living on in the heart of Berlin and the Berlin citizens – like in the ZiLLE MUSEUM here. Many original works created by Zille with pen, camera and print media are also historic documents for the Berlin "Milljöh" and its art.
Last but not least, the Hemp Museum is an interesting expression for the charming diversity of Berlin and its birth place. Here, the old crop and its possible uses for textiles, paper and other fibrous materials, medical products and its cultural importance are presented.
In the Nikolai quarter, interested guests will be able to take a walk and enjoy Berlin history and stories in the proverbial Berlin air. A historical road with 20 large tables is provided for cultural walks through the quarter, which is the town's historic core.
